Plans underway and route scouting
for Kenai Alaska 12-Hour race
Jaime and Eeva have been busy scouting
for a 12-hour Adventure Race on the Kenai Peninsula in
Alaska scheduled for October 14th, 2007. Participants
will endure cold water kayaking, alpine terrain with
significant probability
of
snow, epic bushwacking through one of the northernmost
temperate rainforests in the world, and mountain biking on
singletrack trails on par with the best in the country.
The course is in the final stages of being validated, and we
are looking forward to welcoming racers who are up to the
challenge of an Adventure Race in the Alaskan October
weather. Check out the club
website for more information on this event and other

USARA National Championship Update: USARA National
Championship Report
November 10, 2006
Team AK-ART has recently returned from competing in the USARA
National Championships in Santa Barbara California. This was AK-ART's
first 24-hour race as a team. Team AK-ART performed exceptionally well
placing 18th overall out of 50 starting teams and 33 finishing teams. The
team received an incredible amount of coverage throughout the race.
Notably team AK-ART was one of only 2 teams who chose to race with 2 females and
1 male. In addition the team had the youngest participant (by far) in 16
year old Josh Yeaton. This was only Josh's 2nd adventure race and first
race over 10 hours long!
Team AK-ART managed an incredible comeback after exiting the
paddling leg in 47th place (remember only 50 teams). They managed to pass
7 teams in the first biking leg and another 9 teams in the next trekking leg.
Way to go AK-ART! Unfortunately the team was assessed a 2-hour penalty for
missing mandatory gear, but they continued to push on persevering through the
long, cold and dark night.
The team used this National Championship race competing
against some of the strongest teams in the country as an introduction to 24-hour
Adventure Races. They utilized this race as a learning and testing
opportunity for systems and tactics. But most importantly they have shown
that Alaska can compete on a national level!
Team AK-ART presented with the title sponsor GoLite 2006
Spirit of Adventure Racing award during the awards banquet, and looks forward to
a continued and stronger presence in "lower-48" adventure races.
As always, we would like to offer a huge thank you to the
sponsors that made this trip a possibility. A thank you to EGAD's Alaska,
Free Spirit Designs and Kathy Sarns, Moose's Tooth Pub and Brewery, Peter Glenn
Ski and Sport, The Sport Shop, and Coast Magazine. Please check out our
Sponsor page for more information on out generous
sponsors.

Alaskan adventure racing
team handles the heat well
Santa Barbara, California,
November 5, 2006.
After 29 hours of hard work
the novice adventure racing team AK-ART placed 18th out of 50 teams
in the US Adventure Racing National Championships located in Santa Barbara,
California. Team AK-ART faired well amongst powerhouse elite adventure racing
teams from around the country. The 110 mile course consisted of individual
sections including coasteering, paddling, mountain biking, trekking and
orienteering in the sunny weather and hilly terrain of Santa Barbara.
Participation in this event required qualification through regional adventure
racing events. Team AK-ART qualified in September by winning the EGAD’s Alaska
Bushwack This! adventure race.
While race rules mandated
3-person coed teams, Team AK-ART was one of only 2 teams that competed with 2
females and 1 male. In addition AK-ART had the youngest participant of any
team, 16 year old Josh Yeaton. While many people think age helps with endurance
racing, Josh showed that with a good fitness level and the right positive
attitude even younger people can do well in long events. As a result of their
combined age and relatively unknown status in the adventure racing circuit team
AK-ART received a tremendous amount of attention, including the 2006 GoLite
Spirit of Adventure Racing Award presented by the title sponsor GoLite,
manufacturer of clothing and equipment for lightweight adventures.
Team captain Eeva Latosuo
was pleased that despite a few costly navigation errors and a 2 hour time
penalty received for missing mandatory gear the team had fun traveling through
nearly 100 miles of terrain and 20,000ft of elevation gain. “It is amazing how
we could just keep going and going for 29 hours. We had only 4 hours of sleep
the night before the start and a mere 15 minute nap on the side of a fire road
in the middle of the race.” Keri Koger, the third member in the team, received
an extraordinary experience on her first ever trip to California. “What a way
to see the scenery paddling, running and mountain biking! It is hard to leave
this weather behind to go back home, 80F feels kind of nice in November.”
